Makeup for Prom

Many prom-goers in the month of May are busy picking out their dress and making hair and nail appointments, but what about your makeup for the big night out? While most girls will do their own makeup, I’ve discovered that not many have much training in this area. Having just been to prom and having plenty of makeup training, I have several tips to share.

While you want to look your best this night, it’s even more important to look your best in the pictures that will be drug out every time you bring home a new boyfriend, when your children are old enough to laugh at you, and every decade for the high school reunion.

So I may be a little old to go to prom, but the fact remains that my husband and I went to prom this year!  The Second Chance Prom was sponsored by a local radio station Love 105, and I just couldn’t resist the idea of going to prom another time. It was a total blast! Here are some of the extras I did to create a look that would last the night AND ensure beautiful pictures for years to come. Don’t forget to start with a clean slate: see Basic Skin Care steps 1-4.

  • Use primers on lips and eyes
  • Concealer is a girl’s best friend; use it to cover everything from blemishes to red cheeks to dark under eyes then use it some more!  Dab it on over your eye primer as a base for eye shadow that won’t wear off and put one dab in the center of your bottom lip (over lip liner) for a luscious lip look
  • Don’t be stingy with the foundation – while I use mineral foundation for everyday wear, I like to use liquid foundation for nights like these
  • Put on your colors in a good light or in daylight (this is a good rule of thumb anyway)
  • Choose eye shadow and cheek colors that are a couple of shades darker than you wear for every day; alternatively, you can sometimes achieve the desired darker effect by putting the shadow on a little thicker
  • Lip liner – outline your lips then fill them in with your liner; this is a great base for all night lipstick
  • While blotting lipstick, puff some powder on your lips (keep the tissue between your lips and the powder brush)
  • Finish off with a dusting of translucent powder over your whole face to set your fabulous look for the night
  • Last but not least, top it off with a dot or two of lip gloss
