How to Select a Foundation

Some people do not care to wear foundation for one reason or another.  Why would you want to?  By wearing foundation you are adding another layer of protection against environmental damage.  Foundation will even out your skin tone and provide a flawless look to your complexion, providing the perfect background for other color cosmetics.

There are four important things to do when picking a foundation:

  1. Know your skin type (dry, normal, oily, combination).  This step is important because not every formulation of foundation is going to work for every skin type.  For instance, someone with oiler skin would not want a cream foundation, because it has been made to benefit someone who needs a more emollient product.  She wants something that will help control oilness and shine through the day, not add any.
  2. Decide what level of coverage you want. Would you prefer sheer, medium, or full coverage?  If your skin is already fairly even-toned you may like a sheer product.  If you have problems with discolorations, you may want a product with more coverage, or that has buildable coverage.
  3. Decide what kind of finish you want. You may prefer dewy, natural, or a matte finish.  A dewy look will provide a moist sheen.  A natural finish could be described as something in the middle of dewy and matte; kind of a natural glow.  Matte is a shine-free finish.
  4. Select a color for your personal coloring.
